What is a Slot?

A slot is a narrow opening in which something can fit, such as a keyway in a lock or the hole for a coin in a vending machine. It can also refer to a position in a group, series, or sequence. The word’s etymology is uncertain, but may be from the Old English for groove or channel, or from the verb to slot, meaning to place snugly.

In slot machines, a player inserts cash or, in the case of “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, a paper ticket with a barcode, and activates the machine by pushing a lever or button (physical or virtual). The reels spin and stop to rearrange symbols, and if the player matches a winning combination, they earn credits according to the payout table. Many slot games have a theme, with symbols and bonus features aligned with that theme.
